At Center Grove, worship is a very important part of who we are and what we do. In fact worship is one of our core values as we seek to LOVE, GROW, SERVE, and SHARE. One way we express that love is through singing and playing instruments for the glory of God in worship. The Bible commands us to worship through music and recounts many times when the Lord was worshiped through singing and the playing of instruments and He was pleased. Music has a unique power to touch hearts, affect emotions and change attitudes and lives. Therefore the importance of worship through music cannot be overstated. King David was an accomplished musician and set the tone for worship for millennia to come. The Bible tells us that God found David to be a man after His own heart and he often was loud and exuberant in his worship. Scripture is full of exhortations to praise the Lord with music and singing. Psalm 150 is just one command of many.
Psalm 150
Praise the LORD!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise him in His mighty firmament!
Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD,
Praise the LORD!
It is clear from scripture that God does not care about the style of music, what instruments are being used, or how loud it is. He looks at the heart. The words of the songs and the spirit of the worshiper are what matter.
Our goal then is to glorify God and praise Him through music; to give our best, to be excellent in our presentation, and to make music a sweet aroma of praise to the Lord. Not for our own self fulfillment as musicians and singers, but to use our gifts and talents to lead others to worship the great God who loves us and deserves all our praise.
Let us all then sing praise the LORD!
